In My Corner
Motown fundraising single by Cambridge collective
A group of some of Cambridgeshire’s finest musicians have come together, under the collective name The Weebles, to record a fundraising single raising money for Iain McIntosh, affectionately known as Macca. The project was led by singer-songwriter Gavin Chappell-Bates who wrote ‘In My Corner’, a slice of modern Motown, alongside Macca.
Macca was diagnosed with Leukaemia in 2008. Extensive hospital stays, chemotherapy, stem cell transplants and bone deterioration have troubled him ever since and he has also had to have one of his legs amputated. Having fought to survive Leukaemia, Macca now has the on-going daily fight for a better life. Macca’s friends and family, determined not to let him fight alone, have all pulled together to raise money with activities ranging from 10k runs, golf days, bike rides and cake sales. Gavin, close friends with Macca since school, wanted to use his musical skills to get involved so asked Macca if he’d like to help him write a song to release as a fundraising single.
The funds raised have helped with crucial alterations to his home and the purchase of equipment such as an electric wheelchair, a car hoist, access ramps and a stair lift, just so that he can live his life independently.
In writing ‘In My Corner’, they drew on Macca’s inspiration, both musical and personal, to write an upbeat track which they both hope will get people dancing and feeling good. The song is a dedication to Macca’s friends and families who
have always been there for him, ‘in his corner’, and have kept him going through many dark days.
Gavin pulled together a group of some of the best in Cambridge’s musical talent to record the song. ‘In My Corner’ is led by the soulful singing of Freddie Hall, with additional vocals and guitar by Gavin. The rest of The Weebles consist of
Craig Conkie on drums (Bouquet of Dead Crows / Up & Atom), Charlie Howell on bass (Psyclonic / Up & Atom), Neil Bruce on lead guitar (Bouquet of Dead Crows), Lewis Slack on saxophone and Chas Hutchings on trumpet. The track was recorded and mixed by James Coppolaro at Mix66 and features artwork by Tom Jones.
‘In My Corner’ will be released directly on Bandcamp, and will also be available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, etc.; with all profits going toward helping Macca have a better life.
